Purpose

Life’s Process

If you are anything like me, you have probably asked yourself, “What’s my purpose?”
I am a sophomore in high school (junior in 16 days!). Graduation will be here before I even have a chance to blink. And that scares me. I know that I’ve probably mentioned it a few hundred times, but not knowing my purpose can be frightening.
I have to remind myself over and over again to trust in God. Don’t make plans that I feel that I have to make, just because everyone else is making them. Don’t try to make the puzzle piece fit. Honestly, it is a trying process, one that will not be solved overnight!
Recently, I read a devotion. It is a very lovely devotion. I know that some of you have mentioned that you are worried about your future too, so I thought that I would share this devotion with you, because I know that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“God is all about your life’s process, not purpose. Purpose is a big deal, but not as big a deal as obedience- just doing what you are called to do right now. It’s easy to start to freak out when you can’t figure out your purpose in life, but God doesn’t want you to focus on some great purpose off in the distance; he wants you to find Him in the moment, right now. He wants you to rise above yourself, your needs, and your desires and to trust Him right now, not someday in the future when you find your purpose. God’s purpose for your life isn’t for later; it’s for now. His purpose for you is the process of continually doing what He asks you to do, no matter how much it hurts. If you can move through the turmoil, stress, and strain of life by obeying God’s Word and looking to Him for each step and action, you will have found your purpose. It’s a human and even prideful thing to focus on looking for a “greater” purpose. God doesn’t need your grand accomplishments, but He wants your heart, fully devoted and trusting in Him. When you give your life to Him with that in mind, you’ll see that every day you have fulfilled your purpose of loving the one who gave you life. The more you live with this goal in mind, the better your days will be and the more of an impact your life will have. So don’t think like other people think. Don’t focus on yourself but focus on God. Don’t ask: “What’s my purpose?” You know your purpose: to love and serve the one true God so that His will may be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Line up your life with his, and your life will be a true success.

Hayley DiMarco, Devotions for the God Girl: A 365-Day Journey

I don’t usually like to use the content of other people’s work, but I felt that this devotion was too good not to share, so thank you to Hayley DiMarco!

Hayley has it all right. God clearly states what we are supposed to do- love Him and our neighbors. We want to be successful and have grand purposes in our lives, when in reality, our grandest purpose is to follow God! Such a simple idea has been before us this entire time, yet we seem to want to find our own ways to live our lives.

God is our purpose. God is our success story. After all, you’d rather have eternal success over temporary earthly success, right?

So next time we get down about our ‘purpose’, remember that your purpose is not that far away. Seek God, and you will have sought after your purpose. Doesn’t that leave you worry free? 🙂

  1. Laura thank you for sharing that devotion, Hayley was spot on! It was definitely a refreshing reminder. 🙂 We live in a world where we are always told that we have to do certain things, follow certain standards, and have certain things planned out for us to have a purpose, but that is so far from true. It was great to be reminded of the truth, that our purpose can only be fulfilled through Jesus Christ and not through earthly things. Keep up the great posts, I always feel like you post about certain things right when I need to hear them. 🙂
    Blessings,

  2. I totally agree with Hayley! It is easy to forget that our purpose is to live for God- not a success story! I am so humbled by your comments, and I am beyond glad that I am touching the hearts of people here in this world wide web! I am so glad that you commented- I enjoy reading every single one! (I apologize for the late response… I forget to check my email for the notifications! :))

    God's Blessings,
